wptouch: wordpress iphonified is a complimentary theme installed as a plugin on your WordPress blog or website that will format your content with this Apple-inspired, full-featured theme when your visitors are using an iPhone or iPod touch.

Dave over at mezzoblue tells us his method of giving users a choice if they are viewing a site on a mobile device or tv (Wii, Playstation, etc.). This is a useful tip, even for those with iPhones and iPod Touchs (iTouch).

Well, restrictions are called “bugs” in the iPhone SDK Bug Filing but it’s still an idea of what restrictions exist in the iPhone SDK. Will Apple resolve some of these? Probably, in time. But this is a good idea of what iPhone developers will be facing for at least a year. And really, I think it’s livable.

These aren’t my cup of tea (at least not yet) but I have to admit that the unique wallpapers shown on Poolga would like good on any iPhone and iPod Touch.

Will I ever need to know this?. Probably not, but it’s still cool.

A few sources are pointing to February 26th as the day Apple announces SDK and applications for iPhone and iTouch.

Yahoo focuses on the full capabilities of the iPhone’s Safari browser including browser cache and transfer speeds. It’s an interesting read, for example:

The iPhone has an amazing UI, but it is limited by the small cache size and slow network speed. Downloading large components over the air through the EDGE network is slower compared to DSL. According to published reports, the typical data download speed varies from 82 kbps to 150 kbps. Though the WiFi network speed is usually more acceptable, it’s better to give users the choice in which experience they’d prefer.

Niall Kennedy has a nice summary:

Web applications built for the iPhone’s Safari browser need to specifically target web performance these small devices and special cache rules. Desktop browser best practices such as zipped components and combined files for CSS and JavaScript may be too bloated for the Safari mobile browser. A few tips:

• Limit cacheable components to a decompressed size of 25 KB or less
• Limit yourself to 19 or less cached components
• Minify CSS and JavaScript for slimmer file weights.
• Use CSS sprites to combine multiple small images into a shared image under 25 KB

Also, don’t assume those viewing your iPhone / iTouch site are using wifi. Remember, iPhones will probably be using slower EDGE.

Until iPhone / iTouch Update 1.1.4 comes out with cut-and-paste (hopefully) it’s a pain to type in your login information in safari on your ipod. Looks like this Safari AutoFill for iPhone and iPod Touch might be the answer in the meantime. Install it on your PC, and it syncs to iPhone/iTouch which will store all login information as a bookmarklet. When opened, this bookmarklet will allow automatic login into any website. It’s already getting some great reviews.

Much of my blog traffic deals with iPhones or iPods, so I feel justified in linking to this brief article on ilounge regarding how everyone is waiting for the SDK next month. Given, that’s a no brainer. But how Apple will allow distribution of apps, how it profits off of them if at all, and how iTunes fits into the picture will be critical for many involved. Especially those who want to give away apps for free. This is more than just an SDK and “building apps” - it’s distribution.

According to at least one report, you can get past the 24 hour expiration on rentals from iTunes… just push pause and don’t exit out of the movie. I have yet to download a rental but if this is true then I’ll be more likely to give it a try soon. I only use my iTouch (that’s my nickname for it, full name is iPod Touch) for the gym and rare roadtrips. I can leave the sucker in movie mode for a day or two. I’ll report back and see if this works.

I got to start reading manuals when I buy electronics… Rupert discovers the iPod touch’s Pop-up Anywhere Play Music Menu - basically a popup menu to control music no matter where you are on your iTouch (does it work with the iPhone I wonder?). It’s easy as pie - just hit the home button twice. It will even work on your “locked” screen. Amazing.

Some things just aren’t obvious to me I guess, but thanks to Rupert Glee’s note of how to have fine control over the volume in an iTouch i’m happier. My fat fingers and the touch screen aren’t always a great combo.

iPhone 1.1.3 Already Ready For Installable Apps

• The Friendly Clip is a javascript bookmarklet is a user-friendly way of overriding Web Clip icons.
• “Alex” has made a few WebApp icons.
• Pixelspread has some great looking ones too.

• Iclypso seems to be a site devoted to custom WebApp Icons, but only has a few so far.

Inventive Labs Gadgets has created Tabulate, a clever javascript bookmarklet that gives “open in new tab” behavior. Seems like the great thing to add to your iPhone (I’m adding it to my iTouch ASAP). [ via Daring ]

You can choose to open the link in the current tab, in a new tab, or save the link to open in a new tab later (you can close this box if you tapped on a link unintentionally).

Helpful video tip since there’s currently no cut-and-paste. Basically you need Safari to add bookmarks to your toolbar and then sync those links with your iPhone / iTouch via iTunes. I would imagine any bookmarking or similar widget would follow the same method.

With FeedDemon now free, I wanted to see if i could get my feeds on my iTouch iPod to read at the gym. Apparently the mobile link is http://m.newsgator.com and it will auto-detect to see if you have an iPhone or iTouch. I’m agreeing with Nick - great interface even with my hundreds of RSS feeds, plus they already have their custom homepage Web Apps icon which looks slick.

pixelspread shows a hack of how to override the WebClip icons - in essense creating a WebClip icon on your iPhone or iTouch for your own favorite sites if they don’t have one already.

Ok, I bookmarked the short tip on how to create these according to Cameron, your iPhone or iTouch looks for a special link tag before trying to find the apple-touch-icon.png graphic in your root directory.

This is perfect if you want icons for subdirectories.

Dan Dickinson shows how to create a custom icon for your website that will show up in the Springboard when a user makes a “webclip”, using their iPhone or iPod Touch. Basically you use create a 57 × 57 px PNG with the name “apple-touch-icon.png” at the top level of your server. Otherwise your iPhone or iTouch uses a screenshot of your site as the default icon. Update: Some are recommending that you make the png 158×158.

Another interesting tidbit from the Macworld San Francisco 2008 Keynote - looks like the 1.1.3 update is out and pretty much looks like what the leak showed. For the iTouch though, there’s going to be a $20 cost to get five apps - Mail, Stocks, Notes, Weather, and Maps. The mail one is the only one of interest - maybe notes. $20 seems a little over what I would like to pay but it’s only a little bit more and if the apps match the iphone’s apps then i’ll take it. At least the SDK is coming next month.

Update: Here’s the link on apple’s site for the $20 update, plus a lowdown on the features. Looks like i’m spending $20 today.

Bookmarking this to try later… Zdnet mentions that iGoogle for iPhone has been released and they like it. TechCrunch notes that it will compete with Netvibes. But i like how iGoogle is laid out. I don’t use iGoogle much (news, some rss reading), but might on the road!

Ryan Stewart has a really neat idea here. iPhone or iTouch iPod apps to Adobe AIR… “taking applications that are specifically made for the iPhone’s web browser using iui and turning them into AIR applications.”

Buxfer, like Mint, is a personal finance site… not too interested in those, but this one has a mobile phone interface and an iPhone-specific interface for accessing your account remotely. You can also use Twitter or SMS to get account balances and other information. Truly web 2.0. [ via Ajaxian ]

Mashable has a good list of websites optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but i’m surprised there isn’t more than 20 by now.

FlyTunes appears to be a web application accessible via Safari, which allows users to customize stations on their PC / Mac and then login and listen from the phone. It says “for the iPhone”, but if it’s simply a Safari app then it should work for the iTouch too. Bookmarked to keep my eye on it.

The Touchmods team have released version 1.0 of SIP-VoIP for the iPod Touch. There’s a video on this post from Wired. It’s very beta, but it might be the start of adding the phone in the phone-less iTouch.

Javascript and CSS magic… Apple has put up some sample code that shows off the new window.onorientationchange and window.orientation ability that lets you detect the orientation of the iPhone. devphone.com goes into it a bit more, with sample code.
