Twitter’s Limit

I thought this was a worthy post on twhirl’s blog about why sometimes you can get a “limit exeeded” message on twhirl. Twitter’s limit is 70 request per hour, but you may have OTHER services using that outside of your client twitter app. This just happened to me last night.

Tweet Clouds

Here’s my Tweet Cloud for my Twitter account @dimensionmedia.

  • Follow Me On Twitter

I recently started with Twitter (I know, boy that took a while) and I have to say this is definitely the place for those on the cutting edge of web development and online marketing. Some great conversations out there. If you are someone who’s interests lie in web development, social networking and media, wordpress, or anything else you see on this blog (if you are reading this blog, then you are probably already a good match) then feel free to follow me on Twitter. I’ll probably follow you back.

I also installed a twitter plugin to display my last twitters in the sidebar on the right above ‘tidbits’.

  • “My Starbucks Ideas”

Jeremiah Owyang, probably one of my favorite new guys on social media, talks about the new feature “My Starbucks Ideas” where customers can submit, discuss, and vote on ideas (that’s not the best description, but it’s something you’ll get once you see it). If you have interest in Web 2.0 or Social Networking trends, this is a good quick read. This functionality screams for someone to make it into a WordPress plugin.

    The New Web 2.0 Careers

Got this via a Twitter stream (jowyang): The New Web 2.0 Careers. Sometimes you don’t realize new jobs (now that web programmers and web designers are “old” jobs) that didn’t exist five/ten years ago. Just a quick, interesting read that isn’t code related.

  • IzzyMenu - CSS/DHTML Menu Builder

I forgot how I found this menu builder, but IzzyMenu “allows you to build your CSS & DHTML menu in minutes.” Well, seems to work ok but I was unable to add submenus (in Firefox 2). It always reset to the sample four menu items. Outside of that, it’s fun and easy to use. But if I can’t get past the submenu issue then it’s not really much use.

  • Saw this on Ajaxian - apparently Google has just come out with Javascript API for YouTube that will allow you to develop “the flexibility to customize the YouTube player with their own controls, player ‘chrome’, and even behaviors like custom playlists and menus.”. The YouTube Chromeless Player Reference is certainly interested and it looks like Christian Heilmann has written a video captioning system that lets you annotate as you pause. My spidey sense tells me this has BIG potential and some awesome stuff should be appearing over the next few weeks.

  • PHP Client Library for our Address Book API. Seems practical for social networking applications.

The Address Book API allows for a user to import their email contact list (from Gmail, Yahoo!, AOL, and Hotmail) into any site. Our API is used on dozens of sites and applications, and is a way for users to invite friends to a site, share content with people in their address book, and import their social relationships.

  • How Do You Use Twitter?

I’m looking for simple, direct, and great examples of how one can use Twitter. I just setup my own twitter account, and i’m trying to get some more friends into it. If you got a link to share, or anything else, feel free to leave a comment.

  • Chyrp appears to be a light weight blogging engine, done in PHP/mySQL (some Ajax) and is “loosely based on the MVC design pattern.”. It’s been recently upgraded. I don’t like the fact you need to give an email for a live demo, but at least you can download the code.

Chyrp is a blogging engine designed to be very lightweight while retaining functionality. It is driven by PHP and MySQL (with some AJAX thrown in), and has a pimpin’ theme and module engine, so you can personalize it however you want.

John Gruber picked up on this (and so did i) that Cameron Hunt switched from Tumblr to Chyrp, an interesting endorsement.

Building a .com in 24 hours

Dominiek.com shows how the author built a .com website in 24 concentrated hours spread out over 4 days (hint: he used rails). Looks like there were problems when his link hit digg, so he posted the lessons learned. Thought it was a cool story for fellow developers.

  • Buxfer, like Mint, is a personal finance site… not too interested in those, but this one has a mobile phone interface and an iPhone-specific interface for accessing your account remotely. You can also use Twitter or SMS to get account balances and other information. Truly web 2.0. [ via Ajaxian ]

  • There’s been a lot of talk lately about the development (or lack of) web standards, but not going to create multiple posts about it (yet). Best summary of everything so far is the “Future of Web Standards” article at b-list.org. Also “Reigniting the Browser Wars” and The W3C Cannot Save Us are excellent reads.

  • How To Destroy The Web 2.0 Look

Not my words, but “How To Destroy The Web 2.0 Look” is a design tutorial to get away from current sites, to give sites personality again. I’m not posting this because I completely agree with the author - on the fact that all web 2.0 sites look the same (and if they do, that this is a bad thing) but sites with personality are certainly are not bad things. Bookmarking for more in-depth review later.

Cloaked or disguised agents can mimic Google, MSN, Yahoo, and Ask… so here’s a way to verify if they are actually who they say they are. Reverse and forward DNS lookup warning.

  • Everyone is linking to Jeffrey Zeldman’s excellant essay, so why shouldn’t I?

The trouble is, web design, although it employs elements of graphic design and illustration, does not map to them. If one must compare the web to other media, typography would be a better choice. For a web design, like a typeface, is an environment for someone else’s expression.

  • Developing a clear social media marketing strategy is lacking these days. Although at Dimension Media I design sites while most people have a marketing plan, I’ve had enough experience already to really appreciate this article at Collective Thoughts.

Summary of eye-tracking studies, useful for web designers. However, I wish the summary of tips had more references for each point.
