Being on Windows with Firefox, I found my best interface to Twitter is the TwitBin extension for Firefox. It's easy to turn the sidebar on and off, easy to post, and clicks in its sidebar open new tabs.

Truthfully I use Twitter to send text messages to a couple of friends when I think that particular text message might be found interesting by others as well. Other times I've used it just because it was a way to "blog" when I only had very little to say and the connectivity available to me was my phone.

I could easily live without Twitter. That said, it does provide a comfortable amount of "background noise" that I like. Less "background noise" than IRC, which can too easily suck you in and be distracting.
